“Follow your passion and the money will follow.”
How many of us have heard this quote and decided to follow after this quote without validating any truth behind the statement.
I’m guilty of it myself and I can’t deny that.
I think we as people like to hear things that give us pleasure without researching to see if there is any truth to a statement.
If you have read any of my other articles one thing you know about me, or will now know, is…
I question what are the facts?
What is true about this statement?
Unfortunately, I didn’t do this when I first heard this statement and I changed majors and just believed everything would work out.
I’m here to tell you if nobody wants to tell you the truth.
Passion ≠ Profits
Just because you love doing something does not mean the world opens up to you.
I once read in a book called “The Wizards of Ads” by Roy Williams and he gave the history of a famous quote by the great Ralph Waldo Emerson.
You may have heard of it before…
It states…
“If a man can build a better mouse trap, then the world will make a beaten path to his door”
Everyone that hears this goes on a mission to make something better and just waits for people to find them.
If you can’t see already I can tell you there are so many holes in that statement.
Roy deciphers the origin of that statement and informs readers that the quote was generated by a marketer named Elbert Hubbard who reformatted a talk Emerson was giving to his fellow scientist.
That statement Roy Williams gives an example of is key to this whole thing.
A marketer recreated the phrase.
Which leads to my discovery of the missing ingredient to make money in anything your doing.
Marketing.
How can anyone know of your skill and what you do ,i.e. your passion, if the don’t know about it.
Thats like the age old question of asking if a tree falls in the middle of the forest will it make it a noise.
Of course it will, but no one is around so how can they tell if it does.
Trust me I’m an introvert and I rather not have to go out my way to reach out to people and offer my services.
I just wanted people to come to me.
But I learned, and I learned the hard way, that life, business, and yes passion does not work like that.
In order for you to make any money you have to market (tell people) about what you can do.
When I learned this, as simple as it might sound, it changed my life.
So if I wanted to make money from my “passion” I had to have a marketing plan.
Therefore if we were to rewrite the formula with passion as the key it would be…
Passion + A Plan = MONEY
And a marketing plan is simply questioning, what can you do in order to get a desired result.
Selling is vital for life.
I believe in anything we do we are marketing ourselves, so ask yourself…
what are the stories you are sharing about yourself, or better yet what do we want it to be?
Understanding this one concept of marketing has changed my life.
I then began to study marketing and learned that marketing and market research is key to succeed in anything you want to do.
Just because you love to do something doesn’t mean you will make money from it.
But if I talk about that in this one post we will be here for hours.
The point of this post is…
I don’t believe that passion alone can make you money and sometimes what you love won’t make money the way you imagine.
But if you make a plan based on your skills and what the market says they want.
That is how you can make money with passion.
Again this is the whole reason I am creating my business and I will be going more into depth on this concept of marketing and how it has changed my life through more posts like this.
I don’t claim to be a guru and advise everyone to do their own research to make their own judgement, but follow along with me as I discover and unveil the truths to success.
