I've been studying marketing a lot more recently and one of the key things I've learned is how headlines are one of the most important foundations you can learn.

It's important if you want to create any form of business and I wrote this article as a way to learn the patterns they make, resources to analyze them and how you can find inspiration when you're having a creative rut.

But first why should you learn to make headlines.

Why are headlines important

If you're reading this then that means it works, I got you to click on this post and read more. So why are headlines important? Headlines, or titles, are one of the first things that captures your readers attention. In the world of marketing this is called your hook.

This is how you get people interested in reading, or watching, what you have to say. If they click on your post, article, or reel based on your headline, then you have done a good job catching their attention. Now your job is to not mess it up.

Will your content have them wanting to read more?

That is another topic in itself, but I wanted to give you a template you can follow to create more captivating headlines. Along with some tips on how to find inspiration and to test and practice your headlines.

How to find inspiration to create amazing titles

Create a reference file

First thing I would suggest if you never started is to create a swipe file. This a folder of clips and notes of all the titles and headlines that either got you to click on something or watch it. This was called clickbait but if you can live up to the hook and give them what they were looking for then its a win win.

When you do collect the headlines that caught your attention you should not only collect them but also ask yourself why you clicked on them. This will give you a better understanding of how headlines work and how you can create them yourself.

Resources

Here are some resources and tools I found to help check your headlines ratings. Monster insights created a free headline analyzer tool to help see your score for your created headline.

How To Practice Writing Headlines That Drives Tons Of Traffic

Write, Test, and Repeat

Finally before we get into the formulas and templates, the best way to get better at writing headlines is writing headlines. Profound yea I know. But once you begin to learn the frameworks start writing several versions of one headline to see what you can create.

Also don’t think you have to come up with them off the top of your head, use the formulas as guides and switch the words around with your topic or problems. Over time you will learn how to create your own based on all the practice you did writing.

And of course the only way to know if they are effective is to test them on your content such as your landing page.

Ok now onto the formulas.

The 7 Formulas To Help You Create Captivating Headlines

1 ) A painful and problematic question

This is probably your most basic and easiest way you can create a headline. The best way to do this is to highlight the problem you or your reader is facing in the form of a question. A provocative question arouses curiosity and remember your goal is to create a hook for your reader.

Even if the statement isn’t directly a question, adding a question mark to the end of a title can increase CTR. So if you can be the solution to the question you presented or what people are searching for on google you have a better chance getting more clicks

Examples:

  • Are you still eating junk food?
  • Do you know how to take care of your skin?
  • Why I never trust strangers?
  • What should be an ideal length of a blog post?
  • Why it’s important to wake up early?

2 ) How Tos

How To headlines are simple guides that provide solutions to a problem. It’s one of the most common headline formats I’ve seen around. That should tell you it works. Learn how to spice it up and you’re sure to have a fire winner.

It’s Best when it’s an answer to a specific problem. Another tip on how you can get more bang for your buck is learning how to break down a problem. One problem always comes with a set of its own problems and if you can address each problem individually you can capitalize on creating more content and even building a series around one main problem. It may be easier to write smaller solutions instead of one big one.

Examples:

  • How to start a lifestyle blog from scratch.
  • How to slowly calm down your anger.
  • How to delete an app from your mobile?
  • How to deal with negative people at work?
  • How to create your own email list for free?

3 ) Case Study (How I did this)

Honestly I think this is one of the easiest formulas there is. Not only to create content around it but its like giving your experience on a subject or how you solved a problem. You're literally telling your story what you learned and how you reached your goal. Now you just want to share your findings.

This headline formula feels the most genuine to me because even though you're trying to hook your audience it feels like it's coming from a more authentic place.

Examples

  • How I started my own handicraft business from home at the age of 17?
  • How I made my first $100 on my blog?
  • How these 7 bloggers make $3000 monthly in the fashion niche?
  • How I increased my organic traffic in 6 months?
  • How Laura made $4000 from my six-month-old blog?
  • How I gained 2k Instagram followers in 3 months?

4) COMPARISON [WHY X IS BETTER THAN Y]

We are always looking for who or what is better than the other, I know i have. This formula gives your audience a guide to make a decision they maybe struggling to make.

Example:

  • WordPress.com vs WordPress.org – What to choose?
  • Why podcasts are better than videos?
  • Why the small team wins, and the bigger team fails? (Medium)
  • Why X product is better than Y product?

5 ) Ultimate Guide

You can beat the ultimate step by step guide. This is basically the Big brother to the how to formula. This time its more of an in depth tutorial. This is perfect for someone who wants something like a course for something and I believe can be found all in one place.

Examples

  • The ultimate guide to start a new e-commerce business
  • A beginner’s guide to starting a freelance writing career
  • A detailed guide to eat healthy on a budget
  • A brief guide to generate endless content ideas.

6) ERRORS, MISTAKES, MYTHS, ASSUMPTIONS

Hooking someone how you messed up or fixed your mistakes or busted a myth is always catchy for headline. I think of tabloids when it comes to these headlines, which is a great source for reference.

Examples

  • 7 mistakes that can damage your kid childhood
  • 15 stupid grammar errors you should avoid
  • 4 common mistakes freelancers make in their career

7 ) List Posts

Another classic and popular style is the lists posts. This post is an example since there are 7 formulas you can use to create headlines. You can find these all over even in tabloids too.

Examples

  • 15 ways to surprise your loved one on a birthday
  • 21 side-hustle ideas to make extra money
  • 27 freelance services you can offer from home to make money
  • 61 Instagram post ideas to beautify your feed

For a bonus here are a few more examples you can use as template for your own headlines.

Other examples:

  • The reason why
  • Threat + solution [Severe skin rashes : 3 quick tips to try at home]
  • How to get [benefit] in next [X] minutes
  • Everything you need to know about [topic]
  • How to become [benefit] when you are feeling negative
  • [X] free ways to enjoy [benefit]
  • [X] strategies to solve a specific [problem]
  • The secret strategy no one has told you before

Remember the more you practice and study headlines you will see how important they are and they are used everywhere. In fact you tube creators swear by it because if they can't get you to click based on their thumbnail and title they won’t get any views. That's a lesson we can take from content creators if you want to learn how to market yourself better whether its your landing page, blog post, or a video.
