Lessons I Learned From Being Financially Independent

It was late October and 30 years had passed and I finally made…

I finally earned enough money from a job to pay for my own apartment.

I didn’t care what nobody said…

I was living on top of the world.

I was on my Kanye West…

“Wait till I get my money right.”

Life was good, I got my own place and a new car.

Who could ask for more?

You see just 10 years ago I had no clue what I was going to do.

Life was passing by and I felt helpless.

College never prepared me for a job, so I had no skills or experience, let alone any knowledge that was useful to get a job.

The expectations of college is that they prepare you for life and a job, but sadly that’s not true.

I had to learn that the hard way and unfortunately it wasn’t in time before I graduated.

In fact my first job wasn’t until I was 21…

so understanding the simple concept of applying and being interviewed was bewildering to me.

After graduation I struggled financially to support myself and had to rely on roommates to help supplement my living expenses.

I mean I get it for those sharing expenses to save money to pay down debt or start a business.

But I wasn’t doing that.

I had roommates out of necessity not by choice.

Years went by until I finally got fed up and said something needs to change.

It was only until that day that I got so sick of my life that I wanted to make a change.

Everything I had been studying up until then, since college never taught me anything, I put it into practice to get a better job to ultimately…

a better life.

And you know what happened…

I got a job…

A 9–5 in web development and marketing that paid me a salary.

A salary that a single man can live on his own independent of help from his parents or a roommate.

It felt great.

But something else happened as I was living my best life.

I came down with something…

Something that has been affecting me since I was a kid in middle school.

I got bit by the entrepreneurial bug.

As much money as I was making, compared to $12/hr, I knew I could make and have more…

Even more, when I saw the owners of the company, I felt deep down that I’m supposed to be someone like that.

Owning my own business and creating something to share with the world and generate money at the same time.

I guess I never felt comfortable in a job, knowing I was capable of so much more and making more.

Now don’t get me wrong I am a reliable person and a hard worker who follows direction…

But if it’s one thing I learned from working to move up the ladder is your salary, or pay, is dictated by someone else.

I don’t know about you but I want to be able to choose my own pay and not be capped off by what the company thinks.

I want to be an owner so I can be ultimately financially free.

To do that you have to move a little differently.

So now that’s where I am.

I’m learning the art of business and marketing and I’m loving it.

What so fascinating about this journey for me is creating my business around the idea of providing resources and tools to help young developers not only learn a skill but…

Change their financial opportunities in life.

I won’t forget that first time I was able to rent my own place and able to pay for all my bills BY MYSELF.

I know parents don’t have all the answers and schools don’t prepare you for the essentials of life.

So if I can create a business for parents and young developers alike to teach how to be well equipped for what’s to come…

I know they will feel better too.

Well, that’s it for now…
